Romsey Rail Cyclists - Part 2
|
Cyclists can take their bikes on board most train services from Romsey to Salisbury. A notable exception to this is where buses are replacing the normal service, in which case only folding bikes can travel. Before traveling check National Rail Enquiries to make sure. Taking your bike costs you no more than your ordinary fare.
The bike storage area is clearly marked on the outside of the train, but if you can’t find it ask a member of our staff for assistance. Arrive 5 minutes before the train departs to give yourself time to load your cycle.
There seems to be at least 2 cycle storage spaces on trains between Romsey and Salisbury. However the plusBike page says "Tandems, tricycles and bicycle trailers are not carried unless otherwise stated".

Between Romsey and Salisbury cyclists can stop at Mottisfont & Dunbridge or Dean, perhaps to extend their touring range in the beautiful countryside of the Test Valley or to visit the lovely Mottisfont Abbey. Make sure to select a service that stops at these rather than one of the direct trains to Salisbury.
Traveling beyond Salisbury can get you to places like Bradford Upon Avon. This is a great was of starting a cycle tour along the lovely Kennet & Avon canal (N4), perhaps coming back by train from Reading. Or Maybe head back from or start at Bath for a longer or shorter tour.

Planning Your Journey Using National Rail Enquiries
The easiest way to plan your journey is to use National Rail Enquiries. Click on the details link and then on the cycle button towards the bottom right to see information for those traveling with cycles. The timetables don't say which platform trains heading directly to Salisbury depart from. Does anyone know?
South Western Railway Trains
South Western Railway run trains in a loop stopping at all stations along the way (see timetable below) . They have a web page for cyclists.

It is not clear whether reservation is required or not if you look at the National Rail Enquiries details for the service (see above). I've contacted South Western Railways who say ...
there are no restrictions at any of the stations on Route 25. However, where there are no restrictions in place it is on a 'first come - first served' basis. If there is no space on a train for them to be carried safely, staff can decline a request to carry them. Unfortunately, there are no reservations available for Route 25, only on the services to and from the west of England |
Great Western Railway also run many of the services between Romsey and Salisbury. Their site has information on traveling with a cycle on their trains. Most services don't require you to reserve your cycle space. If both are taken you'll need to wait for the next train. Reservation is "possible on some services between Cardiff Central and Portsmouth Harbour". Cycle storage is inside the passenger saloon. Look for the cycle storage icon on the side of the train.
